Before a single frame, I want to know which window does the work, what time it turns, and where the shadows soften. A good portrait is mostly patience — waiting for the moment the light and the person meet. ## Reading the room North-facing windows give an even, forgiving light that holds through the day. West-facing rooms turn gold late and reward a slow afternoon. I note the reflective surfaces too — a pale wall, a wooden floor — because they fill the shadows for free. ## Letting people settle The first ten minutes are rarely the picture. People arrive holding themselves a certain way, and the honest frames come once they forget the camera is there. I keep talking, keep moving, and let the session breathe until the shoulders drop. ## Bringing it back to the edit In the edit I protect what the light already did.
