Rooms are still, the light has not moved yet, and everyone is doing something with their hands. We plan the day so that hour stays unhurried. ## Find the room with the window We walk the building early and pick where the preparation happens. A room with one good window and a pale wall opposite it will carry the whole hour. If the chosen room faces a car park or sits under a low ceiling light, we move the dressing table rather than fight the fixture. ## Turn the overheads off Tungsten downlights and daylight in the same frame pull the colour in two directions. With the overheads off, faces sit in one clean source and the skin tones hold together from the first frame to the last. ## Let the room stay busy We stay out of the way and keep moving. Someone fastening a cuff, a mother straightening a hem, a friend laughing at something said off camera — these frames come from waiting rather than arranging. When we do ask for something, it is small: turn a shoulder, step nearer the window, hold still for a breath. ## Details belong to the hour Rings, shoes, invitations and flowers get photographed while the room fills, in the same light as everything else. Shot in a corridor under a different bulb they look borrowed from another day. ## Leave time before the walk We build a ten minute gap between ready and moving. It gives room for the portrait of two people who are about to get married and have nothing left to do — and it absorbs the traffic, the missing buttonhole, and the phone call that always comes.
